General SNP Description

The T allele of this SNP has been linked to Type 2 Diabetes and Hypertriglyceridemia. This SNP is also associated with increased plasma triglyceride levels and provides a genetic model for the long-term activation of hepatic glucokinase. This SNP has also  been linked to hepatic fat accumulation along with large VLDL and elevated triglyceride levels. The gene product is a regulatory protein that inhibits glucokinase in liver and pancreatic islet cells. This gene is considered a susceptibility gene candidate for a form of Maturity-Onset Diabetes of the young. Other diseases associated with this gene include Cardiovascular Disease, Hyperglycemia, Hypoglycemia and Obesity.
