SNP Expression Description

General SNP Description

This SNP is associated with raised plasma glucose levels, which is a risk factor for type 2 diabetes among Indian Asians and Caucasians. In addition to that, this SNP was also associated with fasting plasma glucose levels. Additive effects of GCK (rs1799884) and G6PC2 (rs560887) affect both fasting glucose levels and insulin secretion. In addition to that, this SNP is associated with an elevated fasting glucose level, which is essentially pre-diabetes. Possible diseases associated with this SNP includes type 2 diabetes, however this is currently under investigation. This gene is expressed in pancreas, thymus, and also detected to a lower extent in testis. The function of this gene may be responsible for glucose production through glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis. Diseases associated with this gene include type 1 diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, as well as hyperglycemia (i.e. high blood sugar).
